An Invitation...

EWE are cordially invited to attend a baseball game at Fort Vancouver's Parade Grounds.
http://stampauctionnetwork.com/f/f12112.cfm
Not only will you get to enjoy that sport which is relatively popular in the United States, but you will also find double pleasure in the costumes of which the baseball players, as well as some of the "cranks" (the proper English term for spectators), will be wearing.

Step back in time to the 1860s when the United States Army enjoys the fantastic pastime of baseball!

F.Y.I. you might know some of the "cranks." For example, here's Zachary in his spectator costume.

This historic game will be held at the Parade Grounds (opposite the Fort Vancouver site), on July 26, at 6pm. Hopefully, we will see you there!

Weigh-in!!!

Saturday morning, the CODERLAMBIAN shepherds headed out with their sheep to the Clark County event center for weigh-in.
"Weigh-in" is the beginning of a process to make sure that our sheep are getting proper nourishment and gaining weight. We weigh our sheep here and then also when we arrive at the fair.
All of the lambs weighed more than they have in the past. So if you buy one of our lambs this year, you're bound to get a lot of meat. :)

The CODERLAMBIAN shepherds
Megan and Lewe-Lewe in line for weigh-in.
Following are the weights:
  • Joshua's lamb (Clydesdale) - 102lbs.
  • Grace's lamb (Meriwether) - 99lbs.
  • James' lamb (Mauritia) - 82lbs.
  • Zachary's lamb (RiverEwe) - 80lbs.
  • Megan's lamb (Lewe-Lewe) - 84lbs.
  • Madeline's lamb (Surely) - 79lbs.

Madeline ready with Surely

Me (Grace) and my energetic lamb. :)

Each of our sheep now need to gain about 24 pounds before the fair. That's about 0.4lbs per day!
Here is the minimum weight each of our lambs need to be by fair:
  • Clydesdale - 126lbs.
  • Meriwether - 123lbs.
  • Mauritia - 106lbs.
  • RiverEwe - 104lbs.
  • Lewe-Lewe - 108lbs.
  • Surely - 103lbs.

The Latest News

Now that we have sheep, we thought it necessary to send out another 'buyer letter.'
This was the result:

CARAMEL CORN AND OUR LETTER.

ZACHARY "SELLING" THE NEWSPAPER. :)

MEGAN AND MADELINE

THE INSIDE OF OUR LETTER!!!

In case you can't read those articles, but you really want to, here they are:

Little Bo-peep
Written By Grace C. Coder
Little Bo-peep,
Is selling her sheep,
And hoping that you’ll be the buyer,
Please come to the fair,
She’ll look for you there,
Don’t buy your lamb from Fred Meyer!

Little Bo-peep,
Just got her sheep,
On Sunday, the 18th of May,
She needs to tether,
This young, new wether,
For it hasn’t been trained to stay.

Little Bo-peep,
Is taking her sheep,
To “weigh-in,” a 4-H affair,
Her sheep will be weighed,
Some marks’ll be made,
Then her sheep will gain weight for the fair.

The Little Shepherdess

Hello!  Many things happening in our neck of the woods.
On May 13th, we went to Finn Hill Cemetery for community service with our 4H club. We raked and picked up pine cones and sticks that were littering the grounds.
On the 18th, we headed over to Goldendale where we bought our lambs. There were many windmills along the way. It was a beautiful drive.  I picked a ewe lamb and named her Lewe-Lewe.
I can’t believe that the fair is only about two and a half months away! I will be busy getting my lamb ready for the show ring.

Maddy Had A Little Lamb
                 By Madeline Hope Coder
Wow, so much has happened since I last talked to you! My mom had her birthday. My brother, Benjamin, has graduated from school at Washington State University, and is right now in Europe with Joshua! Sarah’s birthday has come and gone. But, the best part is that I now have a ewe lamb whose name is Surely (named after a lamb that I loved last year.)   I will be spending time training her for the fair. Right now, she is still quite afraid of me, but the other night she let me hold her head and lead her a bit.

Joshua has recently been to Oxford and Warwick, and he is very much enjoying his travels.
This is a picture of Warwick Castle that Joshua took.

Sheep!!!

The time has now come in which we actually own sheep!
On Sunday, May 18th, we went to Goldendale to pick out our lambs.

 After the younger kids picked, the rest of us drew numbers to see the order in which we would choose ours.

Community Service

On May 13th, we had the opportunity to volunteer at Finn Hill Cemetery with our 4-H club for community service.

Due to the beautiful sunshine, it was rather enjoyable.

~~~
Please stay tuned as I will be posting again soon.
(You might ask why I'm going to be the one posting as opposed to Joshua, and I'll tell you.
Right now, he's on his way to Europe.)
YEAH! Fixin' up Burgerville
Our club's mascots and the donation barrel
James and a friend putting up signs
 YEAH - Youth Efforts Against Hunger. Last year, if you recall, saw us Coderlambian editors volunteering at the Burgerville at Fisher's Landing (along with the rest of the club). The Burgerville chain had generously decided to give a portion of their profits to the YEAH program, as long as a 4-H or FFA club was present, helping serve and wave signs (to see last year's post, click here). This year, Burgerville not only is fundraising again, but raising the stakes!
For one thing, if you make a $5 or 5 cans (of non-perishable food items) between March 17th and 30th, you get a free milkshake coupon, to be used at a later date. Second, on the night of the 27th of this month, between 4:30 and 7:30, at the Vancouver Mall Burgerville, 10% of the proceeds go to the YEAH program (click to see what YEAH is). On the said night, our 4-H club, Elite Livestock, will be busing tables and waving signs at the Vancouver Mall's Burgerville.
But of course, we had to decorate before the event got started. So the Coderlambian editors and a couple other shepherds from our 4-H club went out today to decorate with posters, balloons, streamers, etc...here are a few pictures before we move on.
Most of us by our mascots
Burgerville is not only supporting the YEAH program with its generosity, but also providing an award to the 4-H/FFA club that brings in the most customers on its night. For a club like Elite Livestock, there were too many of us for one night. Therefore, we split into two groups, and will be at the Vancouver Mall's Burgerville on two nights. (Sadly, we don't total the customers from both nights, but we get to choose which night counts for us). If you would like to support YEAH, Burgerville, and us, come on the 27th, between 4:30 and 7:30.
So, in summary. Burgerville is being generous with its resources, and will be making a large donation to the YEAH program, which provides food for the local food bank. This generosity includes 10% of its proceeds at any Burgerville, if there is a 4-H/FFA club on sight, and providing a milkshake coupon for those who donate $5 or 5 cans of non-perishable foods between the 17th and the 31st. We will be at the Vancouver Mall's Burgerville on the 27th (betwixt 4:30 and 7:30).
Buckeyes!
Voila! The recipe. Enjoy! :)
Ingredients
Original recipe makes 5 dozen
  • 1 1/2 cups of peanut butter
  • 1 cup of butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 6 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 4 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Directions
  1. In a large bowl, mix together the peanut butter, butter, vanilla and confectioners' sugar. The dough will look dry. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet.
  2. Press a toothpick into the top of each ball (to be used later as the handle for dipping) and chill in freezer until firm, about 30 minutes.
  3. Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler or in a bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir frequently until smooth.
  4. Dip frozen peanut butter balls in chocolate holding onto the toothpick. Leave a small portion of peanut butter showing at the top to make them look like Buckeyes. Put back on the cookie sheet and refrigerate until serving.
Buckeyes!
For Valentine treats we decided to make buckeyes!
Sweet, peanut butter chocolate balls that are rather addicting. :)
Madeline scooping peanut butter. (And smiling).
The peanut butter dough
After the dough was finished, we started rolling them into balls.
I think we ended with less dough then we started with. :)
Have to keep your eyes on that Madeline.
After rolling and refrigerating we dipped them in chocolate.
(Special thanks to former CODERLAMBIAN member, Rachel, for that specific duty. :)
Unfortunately we have no pictures of the finished chocolates. :(
But, if you want the recipe for these fabulous sweets, stay tuned until next week!
Valentine's Day Preparation
Here at the CODERLAMBIAN we love getting snow! And, as it's been snowing, we have all been very happy.
 However, snow here doesn't only indicate that we've been sledding and such, it also means that we've had plenty of time to start working on our newest edition of the CODERLAMBIAN.
Since it's February, the theme is Valentine's Day.
As you can probably see by the pictures below, we've had lots to do to get these prepared.
Megan gluing hearts.
Madsie helping.
Joshua editing/writing.
James doing the tedious job of tracing the twelve letters for each individual newspaper.
Part  of his handiwork. :)
Zachary putting together his letter.
And me, planning the layout of the newspaper.
 (To the left) Just a few of the colorful snippets on our letter.
We're really looking forward to the completion of this letter, and to getting to visit you!
Happy early Valentine's Day from the CODERLAMBIAN editors.
